About Mahatao Church (San Carlos Borromeo)
The Church of San Carlos Borromeo in Mahatao is a National Cultural Treasure declared by the Philippine government. Built by Dominican friars in 1789, its 2-meter-thick limestone walls have withstood typhoons, earthquakes and time. Inside, original retablos and Ivatan religious art remain intact. A walk through the adjacent blanco lighthouse and house of dakay (oldest Ivatan stone house) makes for a meaningful heritage stop.
