First-Time Visitor's Guide to Batanes
Everything you need to plan a smooth first trip — flights, weather, must-see destinations, where to stay, and Ivatan etiquette.
Why Batanes is unlike anywhere else in the Philippines
Sitting between Luzon and Taiwan, Batanes is the country's northernmost province — a cluster of ten islands, three of them inhabited: Batan, Sabtang, and Itbayat. Its climate, geography, language, and architecture feel closer to Taiwan and Okinawa than to the rest of the Philippines.
Where most island provinces wow you with palm-fringed beaches, Batanes draws you in with wind-shaped pastures, limestone villages, and 18th-century churches built to outlast typhoons. The Ivatans, the indigenous people of these islands, are widely regarded as among the most honest and generous communities in the country.
How to get there
Direct flights from Manila operate daily (1 hour 50 minutes) via Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific (operated by SkyJet), and AirSWIFT. Book at least 2 to 3 months in advance, especially during March to May or December holidays.
Flights are weather-sensitive. Cancellations are common during typhoon season (July to October). Trip insurance and a 1 to 2 day buffer at the end of your trip are highly recommended.
